She meets her neighbor, Julien, a grieving doctor, and his son, Theo, and their initial encounter is tense. After Ellie has an accident and a stray dog is injured, Julien helps her, and she decides to care for the dog temporarily. As Ellie works on the house, she begins to connect with the local surroundings and people, including Julien, and experiences emotional healing and renewal. The book is about new beginnings and rediscovering joy in life.
