When Perdita McKell’s brother Lennox asks her for help to fund his hairbrained scheme to renovate a tumbledown Scottish castle, she fears it will only end in disaster.
But a lifetime of sister guilt, complicated family relationships and a general sense of malaise are enough for her to ignore her instincts. The castle in question, Dunaire Castle, was the seventeenth-century home to their ancestor, the Earl George McKell, so Perdita can understand Lennox’s romantic notion that they should be the rightful owners and the ones to love it back to life.
Slowly and in ways Perdita could never have expected, Dunaire Castle begins to reveal its secrets; secrets and choices that have shaped the lives of generations of her family. As the McKell story opens up to her, Perdita realises that it’s in her hands to change the course of history and with it the course of her own life – if only she can work out how…
About The Author

My Review
This book is about Perdita “Pax” McKell, a resourceful woman who reluctantly agrees to help her brother, Lennox, buy and renovate an old Scottish castle once owned by their ancestors. When a storm forces Pax to seek shelter, an unexpected fall down a cellar staircase sends her tumbling not only underground—but back in time.
Suddenly stranded in the past, Pax must adapt to an unfamiliar way of life while uncovering the mystery behind her extraordinary journey. Alongside four other accidental time travellers, she begins piecing together secrets connected to the castle and discovering what must be done to put things right.
Jane Lovering blends historical mystery, romance, and a touch of mystical time-slip magic beautifully. Pax is a determined and engaging heroine, and I loved watching her navigate the past with humour and resilience. The growing friendships between the time travellers add warmth, while an unexpected romance raises the emotional stakes.
Quirky, funny, and wonderfully imaginative, Lost Secrets of the Scottish Castle is an enjoyable read filled with mystery, history, love, and the intriguing question of whether Pax will ever return home.
